Burial Pros and Cons

Many individuals or families choose a funeral with customary burial. There are several upsides to this option. Choosing a burial can allow for families to feel closer to their loved ones after they have passed, as they have a physical place to visit them. Families or individuals also have the option of customizing the headstone and grave plot, as well as decorating the headstone and laying out flowers and other offerings. Some people may feel more comfortable with the idea of a traditional burial due to religious or personal reasons. Some families may even reserve a burial plot for all members of the family. While burial is a great choice, it may not be right for everyone. The biggest drawback of burial is its higher cost when compared to other options. Burial along with a funeral and viewing in 2021 may cost $9,420 on average according to the National Funeral Directors Association. For some families, this may not be cost-effective, and these families may choose cremation instead. Personal choices when choosing the burial option may also be limited in some capacities. Issues may arise regarding the location or limited space of the cemetery plot, and rules imposed by the cemetery may limit to what degree a family member may decorate the headstone and surrounding plot.

Cremation Pros and Cons

Cremation is rapidly gaining popularity as an affordable option. According to the NFDA, cremation with a funeral and viewing is on average $2,500 to $4,000 cheaper than a burial with a funeral and viewing. However, these costs do not include the price of the urn or cremation casket, which may vary. Cremation is also a flexible option. A body may be embalmed and displayed at a funeral and then cremated, or only cremated and present at a funeral or memorial. If the family decides to first choose a traditional burial, the remains may later be exhumed and cremated at a later time, if desired. Cremated remains can be stored in urns or other special containers, divided amongst family members, or buried in a cemetery plot. If stored in an urn, the ashes may either be displayed in the urn, or scattered by the family if desired. Cremation may not be the right choice for everyone, however, as each individual has different preferences. Some religions such as Islam and Orthodox Judaism do not support cremation. Some may prefer to be buried traditionally next to family members who have a cemetery plot reserved. In addition, the concept of cremation may be uncomfortable for some.
