Whether you feel like you have made strides in the right direction or not, the anniversary of their cremation is likely going to hit you hard. Understand Normality

The first thing to understand is that having fresh emotions and feeling like you’re taking steps back on the anniversary is completely normal. Losing someone is traumatic, whether you were expecting their death or not. Don’t expect to be ‘okay’ on the day they passed away. Be good to yourself and understand that your emotions rising up again is completely normal and healthy.

Honor Their Memory

A lot of people like to do something for their loved one on the anniversary of their death to commemorate their time. You could do any number of things. Perhaps you feel best spending time with photo albums and videos alone. Maybe you want to gather family members at their favorite restaurant for a time of remembrance. You could even have a full out memorial service. Or you could just visit the spot where their ashes were scattered with a friend. Honoring their memory on that landmark day is important to getting through it.

Create A New Tradition

If you don’t want to stay holed up in your home with your emotions, another way to get through the day is to create a new tradition for that day. What did your family member love to do? Was there somewhere they liked to volunteer? Perhaps spend time at that charity, giving your own time in their honor. Creating a new tradition for that day could help you get through it and maybe even look forward to it a bit in upcoming years as you honor your loved one’s memory in a special way.
